Rock Climbing Potrero Mexico

Thanksgiving last year I had no plans, so at the last minute my friend Carolyn and I decided to drive down to Potrero Mexico to check out the climbing. 13 hours to get down there, including one speeding ticket. I would say the biggest adventure was just getting there. We drove to the Mexico border at Laredo and walked across. We navigated around Nuevo Laredo and finally found a bus to Monterey. As a side note after we got back we found out that Nuevo Laredo is one of the most deadliest towns in Mexico. It is the main gateway for all the drugs that come into the States. Read this article. I guess ignorance was bliss. Anyway, then another bus from Monterey to Hidalgo, and last a taxi to the camp ground. The taxi was the scariest car I have ever been in. We had to hold the doors closed and it didn’t go over 20 mph. Which is a good thing because the guy drove crazy. Anyway we were greeted with a Thanksgiving feast thrown by the camp ground owners.

It was a weekend of first. My first lead climb, Carolyn’s first lead climb, and first time multi-pitching.

Getting home was bit easier. We found a family that offered to give us a lift back to Laredo in their 1980s VW van.
