6/15/08 - Forget How Small Aberdeen Is

I ran in a local 5k race a few weeks ago and ended up winning it with a pretty good time. At the awards I was talking with a guy about the race. His questions were real specific about any upcoming races and how my training was going. Later that evening I learned he was a reporter for the local paper. Didn’t think much about it until my buddy at work the next week told me I was in the paper. HA. Guess I ended up breaking the course record and got a headline in the sports section of the Aberdeen evening new paper. Go figure?!Oh yeah, they spelled my name wrong.

6/11/08 - It’s Hiking Time Again
We’ve finally hit that three weeks in Aberdeen when the weather is actually nice and it isn’t raining. So time to hit up some Munros in the Scottish Highlands.

This was my third attempt at an assault on Ben Macdui, the second highest peak (4,294 ft) in Scotland. Ben Macdui isn’t particularly hard at all. In fact, it is a really easy mountain. I was just plagued with bad luck the first two times. Attempt 1 was with some friends of mine who were not the most mountain tough. We made it about 1/3 the way up and enjoyed some nice views, but bailed. Attempt 2 the weather didn’t cooperate and I was fogged in only 450m up, with visibility about 10 ft.

So with the weather looking good for the weekend I thought I would make a third attempt. Camped at the base of the mountain and started up early in the morning. The weather couldn’t have been better and the views were amazing. At the summit I noticed dark clouds forming in the distance. Made it back to my car and it started to pour.... guess luck was finally on my side.
