I had a three day conference in Houston that I got to attend and “conveniently” enough JD happened to plan a 4 day snow boarding weekend a few days before. What good timing. As always, JD was the master planner and managed to get 2 huge condos that were a block from the main lifts at Breckenridge. Good group of people made it out. About 15 of us in total. The trip started out on a bad note, but ended up working out. Thursday night we all arrived in Denver, picked up the rental cars and headed out to Breckenridge. JD was in a car that was about 1/2 hour ahead of us. We made it to about Golden when we got a call from JD and he informed us the only freeway into the mountains just closed due to high winds and snow. Bummer... but then this is when we started to get really lucky. At the time, we were at a gas station and across the street was a hotel. We figured we would see if they had any rooms. Mind you this is about 10:30pm at night. They actually had 6 rooms free so we took them. Woke up the next morning early and the freeway was still closed. The hotel lobby was a mad house with other skiers trying to get into the mountains. After debating what to do for a few hours we headed out because we heard a rumor that the freeway was open. Well.... the freeway was still closed and we got stuck in deadlock traffic. Again, we get lucky. They had been turning people away... but just before we got to the roadblock they opened the freeway. We were near the front of the line and got a clear run up to Breckenridge and were on the slopes by 1pm that afternoon.
Rest of the weekend was amazing. Perfect weather and great conditions. Few of us took our first go at snowboarding and were hitting the blue runs by the second day.
During the trip JD was in the process of moving to Colorado. As a going away gift Scott got him a Texas flag that we made him wear on a few runs. People from the chair lift were either yelling “F*ck Texas!” or “Texas Rules!” Guess you either hate the place or love it. We made a video of some of the action.
Then headed to Houston for the conference. Nothing exciting to report on that front. Did get to see a lot of my old Houston friends and even managed to hit up Memorial Park for some running.
